Nicky's Drive

NICKY’S DRIVE is a registered non-profit organisation (086-364-NPO) that aims to assist people with disabilities within South Africa to be MOBILE and INDEPENDENT through the funding of car adaptations.

The ability to drive a modified vehicle not only provides the freedom that we so often take for granted, but it also enables people with disabilities to develop their self-confidence and contribute to society through their work and family life.

NICKY’S DRIVE was initiated by Nicky Abdinor (based in Cape Town, South Africa) who was born without arms and shortened legs. Nicky is a Clinical Psychologist, lecturer and motivational speaker and drives a specially adapted car that was donated to her from the UK.

Nicky initiated the project as she needed to raise funds for a more suitable replacement car to keep her mobile and independent (read Nicky’s Story). Nicky recognised the need to extend the project for people with disabilities across South Africa and founded the organisation Nicky’s Drive.

NICKY’S DRIVE aims to INSPIRE, ENABLE and MOTIVATE!

The exciting news is that the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) have agreed to develop the technology I use to drive! After a few months of meetings and discussions, I have had confirmation from their Technology Transfer Office that the project will start in January 2012. The driving force (excuse the pun!) of this collaboration has been Mugendi M’Rithaa who is a leading designer and out-of-the-box thinker! I was introduced to Mugendi through Mark Swartz (Chairman Industries) and I have been INSPIRED, ENABLED and MOTIVATED by his vision and enthusiasm!

CELEBRITY DRIVES aim to spread the word of NICKY’S DRIVE and demonstrate how phenomenal the technology is to be able to drive without arms! Take a look at the video clip of Nicky taking Jo-Ann Strauss (former Miss South Africa and Top Billing Presenter) for a drive through the streets of Cape Town.

Nicky’s Drive is spreading the word about the ABILITIES of people with disabilities though the media.
